Conditions: Aging and Aesthetics: Cheeks

Sometimes, our genetics and development give us a feature that does not flatter.

The ogive line

While beauty is subjective, many agree that a beautiful cheek line follows a gentle ā€œSā€ shape, called the Ogive line.

Some people are genetically predisposed to have small cheekbones. Additionally, as we age, the face loses much of its fat (despite possibly gaining fat lower in the body). These conditions may create flat cheeks that create a bit of an unhappy or even unhealthy appearance.

Rounded cheeks

On the other end of the spectrum, sometimes the cheeks are naturally too full. Deep within the cheek is the buccal fat pad that contributes to this fullness in some more than others.

Laugh lines (smile lines)

Unfortunately, the creases on the cheek caused by smiling and laughing are not welcomed with the same sentiment. In addition to the effect of smiling, losing volume in the cheeks through aging leaves a relative excess of skin in the face. This is like the process in which a smooth grape turns into a wrinkled raisin with loss of volume.
