Treatments: Nose Shape and Fractures

closed reduction

If performed within 14 days of a nasal fracture, the technique of closed reduction is an option for attempting to restore form and function of the nose. Closed reduction essentially involves pushing the nasal bones back into place. Satisfactory results seem to occur about half of the time, but this “quick and dirty” approach does not eliminate the option for a more precise rhinoplasty in the future. Closed reduction may be done with numbing of the nose in the office or under general anesthesia in the operating room.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty surgery (sometimes called a “nose job”) can be performed for the purpose of improving airflow, improving nasal shape or restoring nasal shape after injury, or a combination of these goals. This is a powerful technique that can significantly improve quality of life.

• Animated video demonstrating rhinoplasty for a large tip.

• Animated video demonstrating Saddle nose or “ski slope” nose rhinoplasty.

“liquid” rhinoplasty

The recently popularized, so-called “liquid rhinoplasty” is a technique in which a cosmetic filler is injected in the nasal skin to achieve an improved shape. The result is not permanent, and there are risks with this technique including blindness or dead skin with scar formation. I do not recommend it.
